Scrabo Golf Club is situated high above Newtownards
on "Scrabo Hill", overlooking the Ards Peninsula. The course
itself offers exquisite views of Strangford Lough and The Mourne Mountains.
Looking North one can see the City of Belfast and the world famous
cranes at Harland & Wolff shipyard.
The ancient people who lived on Scrabo Hill have
left us with a rich legacy of stone circles the remnants of the houses
in which they lived. Most have been mapped and are protected by law.
One of these was excavated under supervision right down to the original
floor. Clay pottery as well as ash from the fire was sent for radio
active dating. The large circle which dominates the 13th Green is
in fact an animal stockade along with remains of hut circles. Traditionally
this was called "the Graveyard” and this hole still retains
the name.
